Senior Research Scientist

We’re seeking a senior research scientist with at least ten years of experience running their own lab and managing a research team.
The Yale Flow Cytometry facility is comprised of a large collection of instruments, operated and managed by technical staff. This technical position contributes to the facility’s broad range of services by 1) operating and maintaining a BD FACSAria cell sorter, and 2) providing upkeep and calibration of the analytic flow cytometry instruments. 3) Consulting with users on technique and application development, concerning fluorochrome selection, cell preparation and experimental design (planning). 4) Working closely with users during the experiment to ensure optimal outcome, including advising, responding to requests, and instrument adjustment. 5) Order, organize and maintain all supplies, for overseen instruments. The technician will also train and assist facility users with data acquisition and analysis.
Essential Duties Actively participates in biotechnology research design, implementation, and daily operation of the lab. Develops and modifies procedures and instrument operating programs. 2. Independently carries out research projects, including experimental design, development of methods, analysis of results, and translation of results to high-throughput protocols based on results. Prepares results for discussion and reporting purposes. 3. Understands, plans, and performs complex analyses and/or syntheses of nucleic acids, proteins, or other molecules. Determines the best analytical procedures to accomplish research goals. Contributes to the development of new analysis, synthesis and technologies. 4. Programs equipment with special cycle combinations and ensures special procedures are properly executed. 5. Works closely with users during the experiment to ensure optimal outcome, including advising, responding to requests and real-time data analysis. 6. Contributes data to grant proposals and manuscripts for publication. 7. Prepares reports; responds to researchers’ more complex queries about different aspects of services provided and possible modifications. 8. May perform other duties as assigned. Required Education and Experience Master’s Degree in chemistry, biology, biochemistry, or other related discipline and one year experience or an equivalent combination of experience and education.
Required Skill/Ability 1
Ability to set-up, operate and maintain a BD FACSAria cell sorter. This is a highly complex instrument requiring flow cytometry experience, insight and judgment to operate and troubleshoot.

Ability to call for service when needed and troubleshoot minor problems with machines.
Required Skill/Ability 3
Ability to enforce rules and policies concerning the use of the machine.
Required Skill/Ability 4
Ability to use FlowJo and Diva software.
Preferred Education, Experience And Skills
3 + years experience with flow cytometry and analysis; Very good organizational skills; reliability; good communications and computer skills; independent and self-motivated. Training and hands-on experience with cell sorting preferred. Advanced degree preferred.
